ISU Powwow returns to Reed Gym for ‘Roar of the Nations’ event

POCATELLO — The Idaho State University Roar of the Nations Powwow drew many to Reed Gym April 3 and 4 including Robert Wagner, ISU president and mascot Benny the Bengal who served as a celebrity judge for Ontaria Arrow White’s special.

Ontaria was the head dance judge and she sponsored two specials Friday night including a drum roll call special that Benny the Bengal helped judge. The winners were Ghost Canyon, first, $300 plus prizes, NDN Boyz, second place, $200 cash and prizes and third Iron Colt, $100 plus prizes.

She also had a Collegiate Dance Special featuring the top three women and men. Laryn Oakes, Pearl Henry and Amanda WalkingChild were the women winners receiving $150 each and prizes. Men winners were Taylor Cheii Begay and Dylon Begay, the third unknown, also receiving $150 each and prizes.

Head man dancer Tyson Shay hosted a men’s grass dance special Saturday afternoon. First place was Therein Paskemin, second Kyle Mountain Sheep and third Gary Villa. Consolations were Joseph Baldwin and Xavier Bolton.

Shaneesha Crue, head woman dancer, sponsored a women’s fancy shawl special Saturday night. First place went to Laryn Oakes, Maple Creek Saskatchewan, Canada, second Sallyanne Thomas, Fort Hall and third place was Karen Noon, Farmington, N.M. Consolations were Marianne Christine Addison and Michelle Kipp.

Host drum was NDN Boyz from Warm Springs, Oregon, Jackson Rolling Thunder Tahuka was master of ceremonies and Leo Eaglespeaker served as arena director.

There was about 130 registered dancers. Other drums were Ghost Canyon, Spring Creek, Iron Colt, Owyhee Singers, Bad Agency and Eagle Whistle.

Women’s Golden Age: First: Michelle Kipp, second Pearl Henry, and third Luanna Kickingwoman. Men’s Golden Age: First: James Tone and second Ira Walks.

Junior Girl’s Fancy Shawl: First: Cambri Buckskin, second Tahnee Addison and third Mariella Eldridge. Junior Girl’s Jingle: First: Melody Waskahat, second Lilly Fred and third Gabrielle Benally. Junior Girl’s Traditional: First: Sophia Edmo, second Ja’Sya Navo and third Faith Kelly.
